I am Christopher Marlowe’s father, John Marlowe. I have chosen now to document my son’s fascinating and full life in a short and summarised form for any scholars wishing to study his controversial life.
I am only a humble shoemaker but I always knew my son would be so much more. A shame he threw it away so early. He attended King’s School in Canterbury and received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 from Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. However the university hesitated to award him the degree until the Privy Council intervened, commending him for “service to the queen,”
Many speculated around the reason for this. I have the answer. Marlowe was indeed working for the secret service. The university became suspicious as he was spending much time away from campus and apparently was living on money that was much more than a scholars pay.
Of course, there were many other speculations about my son’s life. A rumour came up about my son’s…..sexual orientation and whether he had a certain special attraction to his own gender, though I can, with quite confidence, deny this claim. There was also speculation he resettled as the famous playwright William Shakespeare though I deny that, as I believe he may have contacted me if this was so. Depends how important it is for him to keep his cover, how delicate his mission was….
I am Christopher Marlowe’s father, and that was my son’s life in a condensed form. No 4 paragraphs can accurately describe my feelings for my son or, for that matter, his feelings, but I hope that this has helped give a general outline of Christopher Marlowe’s controversial life.
This was written by John Marlowe in 1604, a year before his death which ended his marriage that had lasted for 44 years.
